He was trying to run Lipikar at a screen resolution of 800 x 600 when the program crashed. I verified this and saw that this version is refusing to start and crashing on any resolution less than 1024 x 768.

These days, not many run their monitors below the resolution of 1024 x 768. So this bug can be considered as a low priority one and will hopefully be fixed in the next/final version.Santanu Ghoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02399090742565183866noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326507265857650618.post-28935585873557058942008-05-25T19:23:00.004+05:302008-05-25T21:27:32.606+05:30Download Pages Cleaned UpThe Lipikar download pages (both icon-based and text-based) have been cleaned up today. As such, I had posted a request on the Lipikar download page (System Requirement section) for the users to get back to me if they had problems with installing Lipikar on their Vista machines.

Finally at long last, I got the feedback I needed. As kindly reported by one of the Lipikar users, Jos Baldewijns from Herk-de-Stad, Belgium on 2nd May 2008, installation of Lipikar failed on Vista, displaying an error message "Unable to register the type Library: Register TypeLib failed. Code 0x8002801C.".

The error points to the inability of the installer to register the VB6 type libraries because of the Vista UAC. These kind of errors are quite common with VB6 applications on Vista only because of Vista's unique and stringent UAC component.

As much as I would like Lipikar to run on Vista - the absence of a Vista machine on my end makes it impossible for me to review the errors being produced and debugging the program to correct them.

So as of now, it is confirmed that Lipikar is NOT "Vista-Compatible", unless and until someone reports otherwise. The System Requirement section of Lipikar download page has been modified to reflect this confirmation.

If you are looking hard for a silver lining to this dark cloud of incompatibility, I can only mention that if I upgrade to Vista on a future date, I may try to release a version of Lipikar which may be Vista-compatible.Santanu Ghoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02399090742565183866noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326507265857650618.post-65339846745861982122007-07-09T17:43:00.000+05:302007-07-09T17:45:03.176+05:30More Hosts for Lipikar DownloadSix fresh download links have been added to the download page on an experimental basis. Following are the changes from the last version:

Marginal increase in performance.

Some bugs straightened out.

License changed from Creative Commons ND 2.5 to its India version.

The Setup program now contains some Indian language fonts. The user has the option to install them selectively. This has increased the Setup file size by about 800 KB.

Also, the format of the "Assist" documents have been changed to PDF to reduce its download size.

I am trying to add a page for Lipikar FontMaps on this site, where any Lipikar user can upload to or download from. Please use the feedback form to let me know your suggestions.
Santanu Ghoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02399090742565183866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326507265857650618.post-11724970440323621112007-01-01T17:23:00.000+05:302007-07-09T17:23:46.611+05:30Happy New Year!Wishing all visitors and Lipikar patrons a very happy and prosperous new year!Santanu Ghoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02399090742565183866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326507265857650618.post-7666416335144935632006-11-15T17:20:00.000+05:302007-07-09T17:22:29.760+05:30Lipikar Version 3.0.0 RC1A new version of Lipikar 3.0.0, fashionably called as RC1 (Release Candidate 1) has been released. Following are the major changes from the last Beta-3 version:

FontBrowser (scaled-down) module added back.

The Setup program is now a little over 2 MB - an improvement of about 75% from the last one.

The main window cannot be resized freely any more. Window width is now dependent on the FontMap size. Window height can be adjusted by grabbing the horizontal bar between TextBoard and FontMap and pulling it up or down.
This was needed as the window resize function of old Beta-3 was fairly calculation-intensive and was reported to have brought a P-II 350 MHz (Win98) machine on its knees!

Views area now has its own toolbar - appropriate buttons have been moved there from the main toolbar.

License has been changed from GNU-GPL to Creative Commons ND 2.5 to avoid the continued controversy about inclusion of ActiveX controls in GPL binaries. Not to worry, it is still a freeware!

This will probably be the last test release until the full release with integrated help is completed.

Santanu Ghoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02399090742565183866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326507265857650618.post-34724722949247343482006-09-06T17:17:00.000+05:302007-07-09T17:19:37.771+05:30Full Version only after Help File completionI have decided to release Lipikar 3.0.0 with its long overdue offline integrated help system. As the entire Lipikar development team comprises of I, me and myself - there is little chance that it will see it's daylight before the end of this year. In the meantime, there might be a Beta-4 release with some of the Beta-3 creases straightened out on user feedbacks.
Santanu Ghoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02399090742565183866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326507265857650618.post-60902727472421298722006-06-15T17:16:00.000+05:302007-07-09T17:17:04.791+05:30Disruption in Lipikar DevelopmentSorry folks, it seems I have to postpone the release of Lipikar version 3.0.0 for a while. I have been diagnosed with RSI (Repetative Stress Injury) of the right hand and have been prescribed rest. I am trying my best to kill my doctor and happily get back to coding again as soon as possible...Santanu Ghoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02399090742565183866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326507265857650618.post-48959341891749020512006-05-08T17:14:00.000+05:302007-07-09T17:15:22.080+05:30Lipikar Version 3.0.0 Beta-3Beta-3 of Lipikar version 3.0.0 released with the following major changes from Beta-2:

The "FontBrowser" module was removed - it's contribution towards the core functionalities of Lipikar could not justify it's high overheads. As a result of this removal, the executable size has reduced by about 75% and startup time has reduced significantly.

While starting, instead of conforming the window size exactly to the FontMap, Lipikar can now revert to the last window size if the user had resized it.

The installer is now capable of detecting and uninstalling any existing installation of Lipikar. Henceforth, Lipikar will not be installed if an existing installation is detected until it is uninstalled.

Santanu Ghoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02399090742565183866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326507265857650618.post-62220472689014724002006-05-05T17:12:00.000+05:302007-07-09T17:13:47.538+05:30Lipikar Version 3.0.0 Beta-2Lipikar version 3.0.0 Beta-2 released today. "Beta-1" was never publicly released - it was provided to Mr. D K. Chowdhury on 29th April 2006 for private testing only. So, as far as public versions are concerned, it's a major jump from the last public release of version 2.1.3. Major improvements are:

The "FontMap" (previously known as "Character Map" but rechristened to avoid confusion) gets it's own toolbar.

A unique feature called "Custom FontMap" introduced. Instead of operating with a mundane looking FontMap which looks same for all the fonts, you can create your own FontMap layout for a particular font by choosing only the characters you need from that font and arranging them on the 8x28 grid by whichever way you like. Take a look at the two screenshots (normal, custom) to get an idea.

Along with create, you can save, load and edit the custom FontMaps as well. These files are only 2 KB in size and can be easily ported by floppies or mail attachments.

"Options" was changed to "Default Options". Any change in settings there will affect only Lipikar's default or startup options from now on - it will not change any of the current settings.

The "FontBrowser" module gets it's own tab in "Default Options". Among other settings, you can now change the sample text ("The Quick Brown Fox...") too.

Santanu Ghoshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02399090742565183866noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326507265857650618.post-67764872609092412122006-04-20T17:00:00.000+05:302007-07-09T17:02:31.565+05:30New Host for LipikarThe file hosting was shifted from GooglePages to Simtel.net today.
